Have you experienced surgery? Do you know someone who has? Can you help make operations greener?
Patients, carers and members of the public are invited to contribute to the “Greener Operations” James Lind Alliance priority setting partnership
The James Lind Alliance is a non-profit making initiative which brings patients, carers and clinicians together in ‘priority setting partnerships’ to identify important questions for health research.
“Greener Operations” is a priority setting partnership which aims to find out the research questions that need to be answered to help make operations (including surgery, anaesthesia, and healthcare around the time of an operation) more environmentally sustainable.
Operations use a lot of resources; each operating theatre creates around two tonnes of waste per year, and a single operation can have a ‘carbon footprint’ similar to driving over 2,000 miles. The NHS has committed to ‘net zero’ carbon emissions by 2040, but to do this, we need to make operations greener.
Steps Charity Worldwide is supporting “Greener Operations”. If you would like to find out more and contribute to this work, please visit the website, complete the survey, and share what you feel are the most important questions that need to be answered.
We would particularly like to hear from patients and carers, especially those who have experience of surgery. Technical knowledge and expertise is not required – your suggestions are really important to make sure that this work reflects the views of members of the public as well as health professionals.
